EF Stories: Patrizia from Italy in EF London
Patrizia, an Italian teacher at an elementary school in Milan, explains, "Ever since I enrolled in university to study Literature at the age of 20, I've been dreaming of having an experience abroad. However, it wasn't until I turned 60 that I truly felt the need to do something for myself."
This summer, as restrictions eased, Patrizia decided to make her dream come true. She used her Teacher Bonus to finally embark on an English course in London.
What were your concerns before leaving?
"Honestly, I was worried about ending up in a place with only kids. Fortunately, the EF staff assisted me in selecting a school with a more diverse range of students. Now, in my class, I've formed friendships with six peers from Turkey, Mexico, and even Italy!"
Why did you choose to learn English?
"I wanted to learn English not only to communicate with people abroad but also for personal enrichment. Without English, it's challenging to engage with the growing foreign cultures in Italy. If you can't speak or understand English, you can feel isolated."
Patrizia has been residing in one of the EF accommodations in London, located near the vibrant King's Cross neighborhood. She is enrolled in the EF General Course, which includes 26 lessons per week, each lasting 40 minutes.
What have been your favorite experiences so far?
"I've fallen in love with the school. The professors are excellent, the classes are interactive, and the staff is incredibly welcoming. The residence hall is also highly functional – everything I need is right there.
I particularly appreciate the flexible class schedule, with classes held in both the morning and afternoon. This gives me more freedom to organize my free time. I've been exploring London extensively, uncovering unique places like the flower market on Columbia Road and a Taiwanese restaurant in Covent Garden."
Has your English improved?
"Before arriving in London, I felt self-conscious about speaking English. However, thanks to the course, which is conducted entirely in English, my ear quickly adapted to the language. Within a week, I gained the confidence to join in conversations. Now, I no longer feel ashamed and freely communicate in English with all my new friends in London.
When I return to Italy, I'm determined to maintain my English skills. From now on, I plan to exclusively watch movies in English. I'm truly passionate about this language."
Do you have any advice for other adults who are thinking of studying abroad?
"Just go! I finally had two weeks all to myself to learn a new language and explore a new city. It was an incredible experience, and I feel like I truly did something just for me."
